It’s the great equalizer. Death! Sure, some corpses are better looking than others but it all really comes down to the real “you” leaving this realm of existence and entering eternity. There are many theories on the afterlife; many religious traditions. Most agree that the person inhabiting the body does consciously exist beyond the grave. Even science, through it’s various laws, has shown that energy can not be destroyed. It is simply transferred from one state to another. People who have gone several days in a fasting exercise have expressed a deeper spiritual awareness as their bodies began to fade.
Let’s examine what the Bible has to say about death and the afterlife. This will be a stripped-down version due to the nature of the venue.
You, if you are reading this, currently exist in three parts: body, soul, and spirit. Your body is, well, yourbody. You are not your body. You live in your body. It allows you to experience this three-dimentional world. Your body will not enter eternity as it currently exists. It is the seed for your new body which you will receive at the resurrection. This is true for all people, believers or not.
42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:
43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:
44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 1 Cor. 15:42,43,44
When your body dies it goes back where it came from… the dirt. Just like seed sown in the ground. What about people who drown? Same difference. They rot or get eaten. Either way, everyone goes back to the earth.
Let’s look at your soul. Your soul consists of three parts as well: the mind, will, and emotions. This is who you really are. All your decisions are made here. It’s your personality. It’s what makes you unique. It will go on forever. The soul, that is, you, use the body to do your bidding in the earth. The body is the hardware; the soul is the software. The soul decides whether to help the little old lady across the street or trip her and take her purse. The body is simply following orders. The soul is what the judgement is intended for. The decision maker, you, will be judged. Your soul will feel every bit of that judgement, providing there is any judgement for you.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Hebrews 9:27
Your spirit does not belong to you. It belongs to God and will return to him.
¶The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
Proverbs 20:27
Isaiah gives us a taste of the difference between soul and spirit here:
With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
Isaiah 26:9
We really don’t get a clear picture of the difference between the soul and spirit until we get into the New Testament.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
John 4:24
So, God is a spirit, but does he have a soul?
Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
Jeremiah 5:9
There we have it. God is a spirit and has a soul. The two are not interchangeable.
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Matthew 16:26
So, you can “lose” your soul? If you exist as a spirit, and can lose your soul, then I guess the two must be separate, just as God is a spirit and has a soul. Don’t forget that we were created in the image and likeness of God:
¶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Genesis 1:26

So what happens to our spirit when we die?:
Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
Ecclesiastes 3:21
The spirit of men (and women) goes “upward”. Not the “you” that interacts with the world in a tangible sense, but the essence, the spark that was put in you by God so that you could interact with him and he with you. It belongs to him and will return to him. That is why people who are born-again have a greater knowing of the love and existence of God. The Holy Spirit comes and unifies himself with the believer’s spirit and together they commune with the father in perfect harmony as the sanctification of the soul begins and continues as long as the believer lives on the earth.
We are commanded to pray in the spirit as a part of our walk in the “way”. That is a separate exercise from praying with the soul, or “understanding”. Paul says:
¶What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
1 Corinthians 14:15
Praying in the “spirit” is language used to speak of praying in tongues. For more on that please read:

Praying with the understanding simply refers to the mind, which is part of the soul. So, Paul says there’s a difference between the soul and spirit.
We can safely conclude the following from our study: We exist in three parts. Body, soul and spirit. The body will not see heaven as it currently exists. The soul will see eternity through the prism of judgement. One group will experience eternal dying. The other group will pass on to eternal life. The spirit will return to God as it rightfully belongs to him.
